moving targets

Getting ready to go to rehearsal...thinking about how ideas manifest in movement. How or why, i suppose. What are the connections between thinking and moving, moving and thinking that makes sense? We use language to mean something, to give meaning, but there's visual language and kinetic language too. I've always considered dance/movement as a way of knowing the world - just like so many things are ways of knowing, or being, i guess. Thing is, sometimes what we think we know turns out to not be how we want to be. So here's to knew connections, wherever they might be lurking.

i assume 'knew' connections is a play on words! what a complex idea, expressed in simple terms. it made me think of the macluhan theory about tools being extensions of 'man' (sic) ... the pen is an extension of the hand, language is an extension of thought. so movement or dance might also be an extension… there is something about moving through space, walking, travelling, that is very reflective in that sense.

ha ha - um, no, more like a freudian slip...gee, i love it when i'm accidentally brilliant....ha ha ha.

very interesting though. Alexis and I are at FIP , studying with Nina Martin . It was a very good day...

about the mcluhanesque extension and dance... i'm not sure. It is a language in a way, like any language and so a tool, but at the same time it is so close to "man" (sic) himself (sic) ;-P that i wonder.

At its core it's so much about how we actually perceive and experience things - not talking about technical dance here - but more the experiential state. I guess it depends what kind of dancing we're talking about. But, when you layer the sense of space into it then yes, maybe the body is an extension of the thought of the trajectory. Or, maybe it's the other way around....
